TAUBA DEVORAH (GERMAN) ROSEN

1891 – November 7, 1968

Tauba (Toba) German was born in Poland in 1891 but there is no record of her birth in Plonsk.  She had striking dark blue eyes and brown hair.  Her father was Hirsch (Harry) German and her mother was Chana Sura (Helen Sara) Schwartzenberg.  She married Aron Rosen on December 16, 1909 and gave birth to her first son Abram Hirsch (Harry) Rosen on October 9, 1910 (named for Toba’s father).  Her husband left for the USA soon after and sent for the family when he saved enough money for their transport.

Toba and Harry departed the port of Bremen Germany on Feb. 24, 1912 on the SS Chemnitz and arrived in the Port of NY on March 10, 1912.  Toba described a terrible storm they endured on the trip that almost sank the ship.  If you search for them on the Ellis Island Website, look for “Tanta Dwajra Rozan  Many a name was misspelled at Ellis Island!

Toba died of congestive heart failure on November 7, 1968 at the age of about 77.  She is buried with her husband in Hebrew Cemetery in Newark NJ.  Her death certificate was filled out by her son Herman, who did not know Toba’s age.
