Chana Sura was born in Wyzsograd Poland about 1863. We only know this because on her Ellis Island manifest, she claimed to be 49 years old and born in Wyzsograd. She married Hirsch German (probably in the late 1880s) and lived in Plonsk before she came to the USA.

She departed from the port of Bremen on March 2, 1912 on the SS Main and arrived at the Port of NY on 17 March 1912. She listed her contact in NY as her son-in-law Aron Rosen. She probably did not know that her daughter Toba had arrived in NY 7 days earlier. Grandma Lilly said she thought that Helen, Toba, and Harry were supposed to leave on the same ship, but Helen got sick and was not allowed on the ship. She had to wait a week and take the next one out.

According to Grandma Lilly, Helen lived in the Bronx NYC. She married at least once more (possibly Mr. Kleinman?). She died in the Bronx in 1918. Grandma Lilly remembers Helen wearing a navy blue shawl at the funeral.

I’m still trying to track her down. If I can find her marriage certificate, I can find her last married name. Then I can get her death certificate. Stay tuned!
