Martin was born in Tennessee.  He was the son of Isaac Casner.  He married Louisa on December 3, 1834 in Morgan County AL.  The family lived in Alabama, but by 1844 had moved to Texas in the area of Blanco County.  Together they had seven children, including the youngest Martha Ellen.

Captain Martin Casner was company commander of "Casner's Company", 31st Brigade, Blanco County, Texas State Troops during the Civil War.  The unit had a rank and file of 39 men.  On 29 Oct 1863, the unit was transferred to the CSA for a six-month tour.  The unit was stationed at Round Mountain (Blanco County) and New Braunfels (Comal county).

After the Civil War, the family moved to California where his descendants prosper to this day.

Martin died in Ballena Township, Julian CA.
