Joseph W. Bird

November 19, 1840 – December 29, 1886

 

 

 

 

Joseph was born in Georgia (possibly Meriwether County).  He married Eliza Galloway on November 28, 1858 in Tallapoosa County AL.  Together they had six children from 1859 to 1866.  Eliza died on October 26, 1870 in Wood County Texas.  In 1841, Joseph married Eliza’s younger sister, Sarah Civility Galloway (see below).  Together they had eight children including Louisa Idella, the youngest.

 

Joseph W. Bird is listed as in the 22nd Texas Infantry (Hubbards), Company H. ( Rank Private). There is a facebook site devoted to this unit.  He enlisted 10 May 1862, age 21, in Quitman TX, Wood County.  He was on the company muster roll of May - June 1862 and Jan - Feb 1864 as present.  He was on a POW roll as paroled 22 Jun 1865 in Houston TX.  He then resided in Dallas County.   His wife was granted a pension (#17221) from Wood County.

 

On December 29, 1886 Joseph was trying to separate two men who were fighting and one of the men stabbed him to death.  He was buried in Rockhill Cemetery in Wood County.
