John Cleveland

1738 – 1825

The Reverend John Cleveland was a Baptist minister who co-founded the Tugaloo River church with his in-law Thomas Gilbert.

He was a soldier (rank private) in Col. John H. Patrick's regiment during the Revolutionary War.  He received two draws in the 1825 Land Lottery in GA as a "Revolutioneer."

John served in the Battle of King's mountain with his brothers Larkin, Robert, and Col. Benjamin Cleveland.  In this battle Col. Ben was taken prisoner by the Tories.  Just before the Tories were going to shoot him, a rescue party (which John was a member) saved him.

He is listed as DAR Patriot #612124
